PLOUTARCHOU LONGEVITY & WELLBEING CLINIC

Maria Kardami Design Studio undertook the architectural design for renovating the interior and facade of the Longevity & Wellbeing Clinic. It is located on Plutarchou Street in Kolonaki, where the urban heart of the country’s capital beats. Overall, the design re imagines the maximization of space and the architecture of inclusion, based on the concept of a calm, optimistic atmosphere, that goes beyond the typical forms of health related spaces.

The clinic features a reception area, two doctors’ offices, a room for aesthetic procedures, an acupuncture room, a bathroom for people with disabilities, a gym — with pilates, aerobics, and strengthening rooms with state-of-the-art equipment, a vitamin bar, and staff facilities (a locker room and a bathroom). The co-existence of so many different uses – combined with the clinic’s limited surface area – required a creative design, both in terms of layout and the use of architectural and decorative elements.

The curve, a free line that guides and orients without imposing or forcing, is ever-present: in the curved walls that ease movement within every space, in the light, flexible forms of the furniture, and even as a design tool – since it is used on the ceiling to create concealed lighting.

A range of functional details provide the necessary flexibility for the clinic setting. The use of sliding doors allows for the setting of practical and easy-to-use spaces. Special structures in the gym area offer storage solutions for small equipment. Finally, the reception desk functions as mobile furniture on wheels so that the space can accommodate more people on special occasions – e.g., during a seminar.

The primary materials chosen are micromosaic, cement mortar, and oak. The choice of this palette of earthy tones had a dual purpose: On the one hand, it respects the building’s character and appearance through a lush yet discreet design. On the other hand, it creates a serene, tension-free atmosphere—a sensation also complimented by the lighting on the walls, woodwork, and ceiling.

Overall, the well-being architecture — as interpreted by Maria Kardami Design Studio and reflected in this clinic — is characterized by functionality and inclusion. In a dense urban landscape, where even the last square foot is essential, maximizing the potential of any space is a unique comparative advantage for residents and visitors alike. Moreover, the clinic creates a condition where patients and non-patients coexist in the same area, receiving and enjoying values such as wellness, care, optimism, and health.

Aesthetic Clinic

Designed by Maria Kardami Design Studio, this state-of-the-art medical center elevates the concept of exceptional healthcare experience. This Aesthetic Clinic, with an area up to 142 m2, is located in the downtown area of Athens, in Greece.

Maria Kardami has created an elegant environment embracing both visitors and doctors with a Zen medical office space, balancing with a subtle use of carefully selected materials, textures, colours, and light. The space design consists of four medical rooms, doctor’s offices, reception & lobby area and staff administrative area.

Upon entering the medical center patients find themselves in a waiting area that houses a few chairs and a minimal stone-looking sofa next to geometrical chairs.  While most of the room is rendered in grey hues, the immediate area around the lobby is finished completely in natural stone shades, from the furniture to the ceiling, walls and floors.

The overall design concept originates from the eternal balance of Fibonacci numbers by letting empty spaces create a firm bond between body, soul, and mind. Natural materials, including metal, glass, stone, granite and marble, are used throughout the lobby to create a warm and welcoming environment.

All the internal walls gradually create a relaxing atmosphere throughout the natural grey stone hues reflecting in the entire structure of the wall treatment, internal spaces, and the dividing elements. The interplay of light and dark surfaces adds contrast and visual interest throughout the medical center interior, creating a sense of opulent airiness.

The reception & lobby area are of natural stone delicately veined in grey. Furniture, tables and shelves follow a pure minimalist design using the same lines while all sculptural furniture is upholstered in grey sand hues.

A focal point of the medical center is the complementary unity of all design elements creating an outstanding weightless quality of the entire space within doctors’ offices, examining rooms, and private rooms as well. The floor throughout the medical center is of stone-looking minimal style and complements the rhythm of the wall treatment while highlighting the warm and Zen environment.

Moving to the doctor’s offices, we can feel the perfectly balanced geometry of each room. Formatted in modern minimal elegance, in a grey stone color pallet, giving a unique identity to each individual room. Although the main color pallet and design elements is following the entire space, each area has its signature design elements.

The completed interior is warm, inviting, and professional, perfectly reflecting the personalities of the Doctors who practice there. It’s worth mentioning that medical centers are difficult to design because the ambiance must literally comfort the patients. Maria Kardami has proved in several design projects that she knows how to create a haven for healthcare professionals seeking to build a safe, yet elegant medical practice space.

LEISURE CENTRE MYKONOS

Partially set into a hillside overlooking over one of Mykonos’ secluded bays, Maria Kardami Design Studio have designed this elegant Leisure Centre, walled in native stone, as a harmonious extension of the surrounding landscape.

The flat roof is landscaped with native vegetation to insulate the rooms below from the sun’s heat. The cool interiors reflect the local architectural vernacular with white lime plaster walls that contrast with dark wood ceiling beams. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors fitted with white linen Roman blinds open onto a terrace to admit a flood of light and air to the exercise and weight studio. This is also floored in white lime plaster and is furnished with dark brown leather and wood equipment and a few curving, sculptural tables, also in dark wood.

The terrace has its own dipping pool, and the generous curved seating area is integrated into the terrace itself and the adjacent hillside.

A rustic note is introduced into other areas by floors of irregularly rounded stone pavers. In the spa’s bathroom, the floor is of smooth exposed pebble aggregate, interspersed with large, rounded rectangular stepping stones. The sink and countertop consist of one long, veined slab of marble, massive wood shelves are set into the wall, and a large floor to ceiling window looks into a small walled garden. In the spa’s massage room, instead of shelves, rectangular niches are set into one wall. The sink is created of a single block of grey stone, left rough except for the polished upper surface. Bronze taps and hanging wall lights add notes of contrasting luxury.

The spa’s Hammam is informed by the Cycladic tradition of carving rooms into hills and caves. An organically shaped, softly undulating shelf forms the seating around the semi-circular enclosed room, and the white walls rise to a dome in a series of irregularly shaped waves, whose rippling quality is accentuated by muted pin lights.

The overall atmosphere is one of deceptively simple luxury, wholly integrated with the outside environment, to create a haven of peace and pleasure.

Athens Tower – Plastic Surgery Clinic

Maria Kardami Design Studio has created an elegantly restrained, luxurious environment dedicated to beauty therapy, within the confines of a very ordinary high-rise office space, with a subtle and inventive use of materials, textures, colour, and light.

Internal walls and dividing elements are all composed of vertically corrugated glass panels of varying degrees of transparency, reflectivity, and colour, visually united by narrow gold-bronze supporting frames. This wall treatment greatly increased the apparent size of the internal spaces and creates a sense of airiness in keeping with the Beauty Centre’s position high above Athens.

The reception desk and kitchen areas are of white marble delicately veined in grey. Tables and shelves of minimalist design use the same marble, and the curving, sculptural furniture is upholstered in creamy white.

A focal point of the reception area is a lighting fixture in gold-bronze metal bands – designed by Maria Kardami Design Studio – which underlines the weightless quality of the entire space with swooping, looped curves.

The floor throughout the Centre is of herringbone style wood parquet, in variegated colours ranging from palest buff to a deep honey-gold. The effect is both lively and warm, and complements the rhythm of the wall treatment.

Casa Deco

Casa Deco was Maria Kardami Design Studio’s design proposal for an iconic shop in the centre of Athens, specialising in luxury bespoke bed, bath and table linens for both homes and yachts, accessories, gifts, and home fragrances

The challenge was the limited amount of space — 12sqm — available in which to make the greatest possible range of products visible and accessible to customers.

Mirrors were used to create the illusion of a larger space, and a light, bright colour palette further enhanced the impression of spaciousness. Brushed metal was chosen for lighting and structural details, in keeping with the luxurious quality of Casa Deco’s products. Shelves were designed at a slight angle, increasing product visibility and access.

The pattern of the floor was designed by Maria Kardami Design Studio, combining four different kinds of marble: Thassos white marble, Swedish green marble, Iranian pink marble, and Negro Marquina marble from northern Spain, all also chosen by the studio.

Dermatologist Private Clinic

The young, enterprising owner of this dermatological institution wanted a fresh, modern décor, yet one that did not feel clinical. Maria Kardami Design Studio created commercial premises for the client that are both cleanly beautiful and elegantly luxurious.

The overwhelming feeling of the premises is one of brightness and space. White, panelled wood creates visual interest and depth to the walls. A creamy white and café-au-lait mosaic floor unites the spaces, and subtle gold details throughout add a quality of restrained luxury.

The reception area is sparely but elegantly fitted out with sculptural furniture with rounded lines, upholstered in white. Treatment rooms follow the same aesthetic. Lighting throughout creates a soft and flattering yet pervasive illumination, and the fixtures are in themselves visual works of art.

The architect has created is a realm of light from which clients will emerge refreshed, soothed and feeling more beautiful.

Grecian Park Hotel in Agia Napa, Cyprus

The brief to renovate the ground floor reception/foyer, bar, and poolside areas of the 5-Star Grecian Park Hotel in Agia Napa came with a strictly limited budget. Maria Kardami Design Studio realised that major structural changes would not be possible, and set about creating contemporary, luxurious, and welcoming spaces that would appeal to guests from all over the world.

The original building structure, spot lights and chandelier in the reception/lobby were retained. The existing honey-coloured wood panelling and floor were complemented with cream-coloured rugs and soft furnishings, accented by gold accessories, detailing and standing lamps of contemporary design, all of which were designed and custom made by the Studio. The transformation created a warmly elegant space in which guests are welcomed, gather to listen to live music, or can simply relax.

The poolside areas were simply yet thoughtfully unified by the use of basket-weave chairs in soft blue, and round, marble-topped circular tables with conical basket-weave bases of the same colour.

Furniture and accessories designed and custom fabricated in-house. Bar stools with curved wood frames have a touch of Art Deco glamour in the styling. Contemporary gold lighting fixtures with clean geometric shapes, a soft banquette encircling a pillar, and small round tables on gold pillar pedestals continue the theme. A spectacular yet simple gold spiral staircase takes guests to the seating area above the bar, and acts as a focal point for the room.
